DIOGO APPLETON
Diogo Appleton is a Portuguese surfer and craftsman who lives and works in Lisbon,
Portugal, where he handcrafts surfboards. His journey into shaping began in 2014,
following a trip to Australia that introduced him to new interpretations of surfing and encouraged him
to develop a more personal relationship with the ocean. Back in Portugal,
he began shaping his first boards alongside his father, carrying forward a family tradition and turning it into his craft.
RRW JOURNAL
His practice is rooted in the meeting point between first-hand experience in the water,
a sensitivity to craftsmanship and a desire to experiment. Each board is designed
to respond to the needs of the person who will ride it, the conditions of the waves and the sensations they seek while surfing.
Longboards, fish and alternative shapes become tools for exploring different ways of experiencing the sea,
with an emphasis on fluid movement, freedom and the pleasure of finding one's own balance on a wave.
His work is guided by a respect for time and the hands-on process.
From defining proportions to shaping the foam and refining the final details,
every stage requires attention, precision and an in-depth understanding of the material.
The constant dialogue between design and time spent in the water fuels an ever-evolving process,
in which each board represents a new opportunity for exploration. For Diogo,
shaping a surfboard means translating personal experience into a functional object that brings together craftsmanship,
movement and a connection with the ocean.
